How to achieve the Standard
- A school or college registers with the Democracy in Schools Standard.
- The school or college receives a pack which contains the standards, exemplification of the standards to assist them in evaluating whether they are met and an evidence portfolio to support the school's evidence/record keeping ready for assessment.
- The school or college is recorded publicly on this website as "working towards" the Standard.
- When the school or college believes it meets all of the standards, it contacts the Democracy in Schools Standard to arrange the assessment.
- The assessment takes place at the school or college.
- The assessor submits a report to the awarding panel who decide whether the school or college has achieved the Standard.
- Either the award is made or recommendations are made to the school or college in order for any shortfalls to be addressed prior to a reassessment.
The Cost
The cost is based on the assessment required and is fixed, irrespective of the size of the school or college.
- Initial Registration £250 + VAT
- Assessment £1,000 + VAT
A reduced assessment fee is charged if a reassessment is required on condition that it takes place within one year of the initial assessment.
Being awarded the Standard
If the school or college has successfully met the standards they will receive a plaque, a certificate and permission to use the Democracy in Schools Standard logo on its stationery.
The success of the school or college will be published in the educational press and on the Democracy in Schools Standard website. At the same time the company will notify the Leader of the local council and local MP with a view to stimulating local publicity and recognition.
The award is made for a three year period. To maintain the Standard a school must apply to be reassessed within three years of the initial award.
